this isn’t your average weekend.
Every year, hunters from across New Zealand descend on Rotherham for three days of competition, community, and the kind of weigh-in day you talk about for months.
Prizes worth turning up for, junior categories for the next generation, and every single dollar raised goes back to Rotherham School and the community pool that this town runs on.
We’ve been called controversial. We’ve made international headlines. And we keep selling out.
– See you at the scales
the reason we do it.
The North Canterbury Hunting Competition exists for a simple reason: because this community backs itself.
In rural places like ours, when something matters, whether it’s a school, a facility, or an essential service, we step up and support it. This event is part of that mindset. It brings people together to raise funds for what keeps our community strong, while also playing a practical role in managing pests and protecting our environment.
Responsible hunting helps maintain the balance our land depends on. It’s also about connection and learning, especially for the next generation. Kids gain an understanding of where food comes from, how to respect animals and the land, and the importance of doing things properly. That experience doesn’t take away empathy. It helps build it. These kids grow up grounded, capable, and aware of the realities of the world they live in, not sheltered from it.
More than anything, it’s about community. Families, farmers, and locals sharing time, knowledge, and values that keep small towns strong.
We don’t do it for controversy. We do it because it works. We do it because it helps.
And we do it because looking after our people, our environment, and our future is simply what we do.
